Can community pharmacists improve tuberculosis case finding?

India has the world’s highest burden of tuberculosis (TB). Private retail pharmacies are the preferred provider for 40% of patients with TB symptoms and up to 25% of diagnosed patients. Engaging pharmacies in TB screening services could improve case detection.

This new BMJ Global Health paper describes a novel intervention where pharmacists were educated and incentivized to use chest x-ray vouchers for screening and linkage to care.

Thank you for the article. Interesting study. Would UHC with the patients consultation fee fully covered perhaps yielded more? It is good to know that the reimbursement was not the motivation factor to refer patients.
