This op-ed discusses the importance of diagnostics for cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of mortality in India. India is well-suited to adopt a National List of Essential Diagnostics (NLED). In
2015, India’s Ministry of Health announced the National Free Diagnostic Service Initiative. This project aims to provide free diagnostic testing to those visiting public health facilities, and similar to an EDL, included a set of tests at different tiers in the health system. In December, 2018, India published the first draft of their NLED, a key step towards official adoption and implementation.
