StopTB Field guide 7: The role of laboratory systems in TB case detection

This technical document provides information on the crucial role of TB diagnostic facilties in delivering laboratory services as part of case detection activities. It highlights its impact in finding missing people with TB who are not usually detected by routine health services.

Specifically, this document contains relevant experiences from the field, discussing laboratory systems practices that were effective in specific regions and countries as they are applied in each diagnostic test - smear microscopy, molecular tests (such as Xpert MTB/RIF), urine LAM and TB culture. Monitoring and evaluation for laboratory network has been emphasized, including the EQA schemes necessary to achieve and maintain quality tests for patients under the TB control program.
